FACT: A recent study compared the development of children in relation to the quality of child care they receive. This research tracked the children's progress from age three through second grade and found that children in high quality care demonstrated greater mathematic ability, greater thinking and attention skills, and fewer behaviorial problems as compared to the children in lower quality child care.
FACT: These differences hold true for children from a variety of family backgrounds. School age children also benefit when they have an opportunity to participate in a quality after-school program. A three year study of programs in high-crime neighborhoods determined that children who participated had fewer school absences, better conflict-management strategies, and better work habits at school than their classmates that did not attend such programs.
